About Combining Diacritical Marks

Unicode combining diacritical marks (U+0300 to U+036F) are characters designed to be combined with the preceding base character. Unlike precomposed characters such as "e" (a single code point), combining marks let you build virtually any character-plus-accent combination, including ones that don't exist as precomposed forms.

This approach is fundamental to Unicode's design — it means every possible accent can be applied to every possible letter without requiring millions of precomposed characters. The marks are grouped into those that appear above, below, or through the base character.
