About Symbol Emojis
Symbol emojis are the bridge between traditional Unicode symbols and the modern emoji set — over 230 in total, covering hearts, zodiac signs, arrows, currency, religious symbols and warning signs. Many existed as plain monochrome Unicode characters long before emoji was a concept: ❤ (Heavy Black Heart) has been in Unicode since version 1.1 in 1993, but only became the colourful red heart we know after platforms started rendering it as emoji around 2010. Each platform's emoji presentation can be requested explicitly with the variation selector U+FE0F — that's why some hearts appear as plain glyphs unless followed by VS16.

Platform rendering differences
Heart colours and shading differ subtly across vendors — Apple's ❤️ has a glossy gradient, Google's is flatter and a touch more orange. The 💔 broken-heart line jags differently on every platform. Zodiac symbols are stylised on Apple and Twitter but rendered as plain monochrome glyphs on older systems unless the variation selector is present. The ☢️ Radioactive sign is yellow on Apple but rendered with a darker background on Google.
